Usability Laboratory Testing

HITC offers an advanced Usability Laboratory to test product prototypes and design concepts, and to test finished products in preparation for redesign. In addition, the HITC User-centered Design Services group offers needs analysis studies, organizational dynamics studies, and interface design, plus training for product developers who wish to follow the User-centered Design approach in their own efforts.

The HITC Usability Lab studies real users under controlled conditions as they operate a variety of products and systems. The usability test answers questions about the effectiveness and ease of use for a product or interface. Some general questions are:

  • Where do users have problems performing tasks?
  • Does the product support the tasks being performed by the user?
  • Where do users make errors?
  • How long does it take to perform specific tasks?
  • How satisfied are the users

Answers to these questions typically result in recommendations on how to make the product more usable. Usability testing can also support efforts in development and marketing.
