The New User Interface team focuses on modalities and architectures of user interfaces. Modalities are the different ways in which people can enter information into and receive information from computers.

We use the User-Centered Design process to build models of users, tasks, and environments to guide the selection of best interface modalities. These models--combined with cognitive engineering principles--help us construct user interfaces that are tailored to a particular set of users and their tasks. We select from physical devices and logical modalities.
